A financial adventurer becomes a hero to some, a villain to many, and a lover to one as he buys and sells companies in a thrilling game of wits and cunning in this New York Times bestseller from the author of Executive Suite

Cash McCall is a believer in free enterprise, a man not yet forty who buys, sells, and merges companies to make huge profits in a postwar nation of conformist “company men.” McCall is an enigma who operates out of an expensive tenth-floor suite in a Philadelphia hotel that he may or may not own. He’s single, conducts secret business meetings, and is both envied and hated. No one knows where he came from.

Grant Austen spent three decades building his plastics company. Now, as he seeks counsel from his banker and lawyer about selling out, he unwittingly triggers a whirlwind of corporate and financial maneuvering he doesn’t fully understand. And his daughter, Lory, commits the cardinal sin of falling in love with Cash McCall, the man who’s about to buy her father’s company out from under him.

But who is Cash McCall? A ruthless operator or a rugged individualist? Reminiscent of Ayn Rand’s The Fountainhead, this is a novel about love, the free enterprise system, and one man’s refusal to be anyone but himself.

I found this book to be quite interesting and good. Of course, it is date, being written in the min 1950's-so it is interesting reading about the tax problems they had back then. But the story was about this young woman and her growth and ultimate ability to handle adult relationships.

I don't want to give away too much of the book because it is so interesting in the way the plot develops.

One think-I discovered there is a movie based on this book. Now, it might be a good movie and it might even resemble the book-but looking at the trailer it looked like a much different story. So, if you saw the movie and think the book is jnk, you would be surprised to find that it wasn't that at all.

Just remember that the attitudes, morals and social expectations are from the mid 1950's and you'll be OK.

I read this book maybe 50 years ago and for some reason thought of it recently so purchased it again and I'm glad I did. This is a really fun book especially after so long - it starts with comments about 80 cent breakfasts - a fantasy today! This is a great read and in spite of a 1955 setting is lots of fun.
I first read this for over 40 years ago. It was even better this time. I have, also, seen the movie made from it. If you love the book, don't expect the movie to be as good. It was a cute movie, but not the same. I have always wished I could see the house in the rock. If I could only have one, I would take the book. I wish it were on Audible, so I could listen to it on trips.
Through an intriguing love story, we get a glimpse into the life of a young man who is an accomplished, exciting, self-made, and noble businessman. We see the risks, the deals, the high-stakes, the intelligence, the conflicts, and the adventures that fill his life. I was inspired reading it. There should be more books like this, which show the honor and greatness of business. Reviewed by Gen LaGreca, author of NOBLE VISION. Noble Vision
In too many books and movies, all businessmen are portrayed as ruthless and greedy cretins. Mr. Hawley writes from a different persepective and one that I share. The idea that business is a noble pursuit and does much more to elevate society at large than it does to diminish it.

There will always be cheats, crooks and con men, but they are the exception rather than the rule. Hawley also paints a vivid picture of how the governments tinkering with the economy and taxation affects the ways that business people respond to such actions.

This is a very good book and I think people who like Atlas Shrugged will enjoy all of Hawley's books...
I got this because I had recently seen the movie with James Garner and Natalie Wood, which was a really good adaptation. The book is a n excellent study of American business in the years after the war. The characters are believable and engaging. The description of the times and the way business was evolving is more like history than fiction.

An enjoyable read.
Cameron Hawley is a gifted writer. I like the style of this story, the introduction of the various characters allow us to feel an intimacy of their lives in great detail as each tells a part of the story. We see by this chunking of individual point of view the interactions between the personalities and the differences in how each views the unfolding story. The movie with James Garner was good but the book, as usual, goes way beyond the hour and a half of film. When a novel is well written it suggests the cast membership of any attempt to create a film version. The plot is well suited for the basic story line and the action is quickly pace through the exposition. The writing is tight, very little wasted effort so the reader does not tire.
